We took Veronica and Paige shooting

Posted on November 13, 2011 at 11:25 PM Comments comments (0)
We are wiped out. It's bedtime and I'm sitting waiting for the girls to fall asleep. We took the girls shooting. We drove past bush highway/87 and drove around looking for a spot to set up. All the spots were taken. Some of them really moved in w lawn chairs and tents. We had to drive further and further in and the road was becoming less and less supporting and more and more like quicksand. Finally we went around a corner and right up to our door in sandy road. We were stuck. Veronica stepped out right onto the sand. It was seriously up to her door. We drove forward and backward for absolutely no results. We jacked up the truck and put rocks and boards underthe tires. Still nothing happened. Anotherfamily drove up on a truck and they helped us for probably 2 hours until we got unstuck. They told us they just unstuck their truck right before they found us. It was such a relieving moment to drive the truck out of that rut. I got their address and told them we will mail them biscochitos. They were so nice to help us. We set up our table and our targets. Veronica and Paige were so nervous and Matthew helped them at the beginning. They were really good. They hit those targets again and again. Matthew and I shot all the guns we brought. He sighted his hunting gun so it will work better for him on his trips. The girls had so much fun. They loved shooting. We came home and veronica and Matthew pulled out all the parts to our 12 foot tree and Paige and I made him a birthday cake. We ate dinner and sang happy birthday before we ate the cake and went to bed. We are exhausted. Good night.

Las Vegas

Posted on November 5, 2011 at 11:25 AM Comments comments (1)
We are on the road in the desert coming back from Vegas. There's nothing like Vegas and there's nothing like Vegas on Halloween. To add another dimension to that thought there's nothing like taking your kids to Vegas on Halloween. We took the girls to las Vegas to see Americas got talent live. It was very inspiring. We saw landau Eugene Murphy jr, anna graceman, silhouettes, pop lyfe, Landon swank (Matthew said I have to mention Landon swank's fiancé harmony). Veronica and Paige were perfectly blown away. We are going to have to reboot their brains before school starts on Monday. They finally went to their first concert. We left Thursday night after Veronica finished basketball training. We said good ye to Vader and we were on the road at around 10:00 pm.the girls fell asleep and I talked (mostly about nonsense) to keep Matthew awake. We drove over the new dam road. They made it so you can't see anything. Maybe they could have put a strip of glass so we could see how cool it is. 10 years ago we could have said it would weaken the structure, but now they have people standing on glass over the grand canyon. We got into our hotel room around 4:00 am. It was beautiful. It had a sitting area w a pull out bed, an office area and a king size bed. It was a sweet little suite. We put out the do not disturb sign, closed the dark curtains (only Vegas has those curtains that block light like winter in AK) and slept until Paige woke us up to tell us it was tomorrow. She woke up first and stared out the window at the city she had never seen before until she couldn't stand it any more. We left to look for the mcdonalds we saw in the hotel window, but we must have gone the wrong way. Somehow we found the only road in America that didn't have a mcdonalds on it. We drove around until finally we parked at ceasars palace and ate at the cheesecake factory (you can eat cheesecake but you can't eat cake cheese). By the way, the cheesecake factory has the most fabulous cheesecake. Who would have thought. Then we watched the statues fight with fire and water and looked at the fish and stingrays in the tank. There is a h&m store where the fao Schwartz store used to be. That was a huge disappointment except there was a real live dj there. We watched him mix for awhile. He was super cool. I would still take fao schwartz over h&m. I went into the coach store to price my perfume and I found a purse. Again, who would have thought. We left, however five hours later we left that same store with the purse and no perfume. we took the girls outside to walk on the strip. We got to the Bellagio fountain just as it was starting. It was beautiful and overwhelming and larger than life. I felt like the oceans eleven crew. We walked past the Eiffel tower and got Eiffel tower margaritas. I thought I was set for the day with my happy-making margarita but four hours later the bouncers at the concert made me throw it away. We chased a real life hello kitty who was walking around. We wanted to take a picture with her but she disappeared. We took the escalator up so we could cross las Vegas blvd and took the escalator down. We landed in front of a restaurant called serendipity 3. They had hello kitty toys at the hostess area and $88 sundaes. We opted for pizza and a sundae better priced for our family. I told the waiter you just can't not finish $88 ice cream. We ended up back inside ceasars palace standing in the coach store, buying the purse. The whole time we paid for the most beautiful purse in the world, my mind was on the man and his dog sitting outside, wondering if they were going to sleep there right where I saw them. Then we went to the concert hall where they gave us ear plugs and booster seats for Veronica and Paige. AGT was inspiring and beautiful and hopeful. I cried through a lot of the parts. Jerry springer was more funny than I expected. For the past 20 years watching his show, I never imagined I would be a part of an audience screaming "Jerry Jerry". He surprised me with his range of emotion. He cried after the silhouettes danced to "America the beautiful". Everyone did. We walked out of the concert hall into ceasars palace at 10:30 pm, right smack into las Vegas on a Friday night on Halloween weekend. Everybody was dressed in costumes. The whole strip was the biggest costume party I've ever seen. One group had probably 15 banana costumes walking w one monkey costume. We picked up our car at the valet and drove past probably 3 mcdonalds on the short way back to our hotel. We changed out of our very smoky clothes and went to sleep.

My back is out. Ow. Major ow. We watched the agt results show. A lot of my favorites went through. My poor piano player boy didn't though. I hope he knows he has enough 'it' to make it on his own. I'd love to see him in concert.

Comic book fans, creators mourn Arizona’s Atomic Comics

21 August 2011 4 Comments Jayson Peters

It’s the end of an era for many pop culture fanatics in the Valley as word spreads that the local comic book chain Atomic Comics has closed its doors.

Up until Sunday, Atomic had stores at Country Club Drive and Southern Avenue in Mesa, Chandler Fashion Center, Metrocenter Mall in Phoenix and Paradise Valley Mall.

Former P.V. store manager Thomas Healy was among several employees to verify the growing reports Sunday on Twitter: “Yes @Atomic_Comics is now closed. I will miss running my store. I had the best staff ever!” He later clarified that all four stores were closed.

The chain had a reputation nationwide for a knowledgeable staff as well as frequent promotions and popular events that brought big-name industry talent to connect with fans in the Valley. The owner used his connections well, even managing to get the store’s brand featured as the comic book shop in last year’s big-screen adaptation of the Mark Millar-John Romita Jr. title Kick-Ass.

The business had recently shut down its online storefront, with a note that it would soon return; its store on eBay also was dark. Atomic, like all players in the print media game, faced major challenges from digital distribution schemes and the sluggish-at-best economy.

Sunday night, online reports of Atomic Comics’ demise from sites such as The Beat, The Outhouse and Newsarama spurred an emotional reaction on social networking sites like Twitter from patrons and comics industry figures.

“Horrified & upset to hear about Atomic Comics closing,” wrote Choker writer Ben McCool. “Was lucky enough to sign there last year & had the time of my life. Devastating blow. … Mike texted me to confirm. Sad but true.”

“Incredibly sad day today,” wrote Marvel Comics chief creative officer Joe Quesada. “The best retailer I’ve ever met closed his doors. There’s never been anyone like @atomicmike and there never will.”

Marvel writer Brian Michael Bendis said: “i don’t know what happened or whats up but @atomicmike is and will always be one of the best retailers ever!”

“@Atomicmike” is Mike Malve, the store’s owner, who did not wish to comment but used his final weekly newsletter to confirm the chain’s demise and elaborate on the financial situation that led to its closing.

“The villain in this tragedy is the economy,” he wrote. “I had hoped to be the superhero and triumph over the recession, but sadly the economic downturn of the past five years has proven to be unsustainable.”

Malve said plunging sales as the economy soured turned the leases at the chain’s four high-visibility locations, once considered a branding boon, into a burden.

Ultimately, however, Malve traces the downfall’s beginning to Halloween 2006, when a teenage girl drove a car through the Mesa store’s window, smashing water pipes and damaging nearly $1 million worth of inventory. It reopened five months later as a gathering spot for collectors and casual readers alike — but many regular patrons never came back.

“The damages were so severe we lost close to a million dollars in product. The loss of revenue due to being closed all those months as we headed into retail’s busiest season was astronomical,” Malve’s statement said. “What really stood out to me was how many of Atomics’ customers were lost as we rebuilt the store. It seemed as if half our customers never returned. The great mystery to me is what exactly happened to all those missing customers. I can only speculate that once you take away the habit of weekly buying-it is hard to jump back into it.”

He also revealed he has filed for bankruptcy and is losing a home that was used as security against the four stores’ broken leases.

Malve started the chain in 1988 as Bubba’s Comic Store in Phoenix. It moved to Mesa a year later and changed its name to Atomic Comics. For years it was in the now-defunct Fiesta Village Shopping Center at the corner of Southern Avenue and Alma School Road, across the street from Fiesta Mall, but it later moved to Southern and Country Club before getting its unplanned renovation.

The store on Metrocenter’s outer loop opened in 1993, moving to a new spot there fronting Dunlap Avenue in 2009.

The Chandler store opened in 1997, later moving to the mall area in 2002.

Paradise Valley got its location in 2001.

According to Malve’s statement, at one point the chain employed up to 60 people.

A sign posted outside the closed Mesa store Monday morning directed comic shoppers to other local spots, like the downtown drag’s recently opened Gotham City Comics & Coffee.

i had the most fabulous carmel apple last night. My neighbors made the apples for their "get organized" party. I waited until the girls fell asleep and I ate it to the core. Leave it to Erin and kiresten to make a simple apple taste like the most sinful Devine dessert. The party was such a good idea too. One mom said she uses photo books to turn her blog into an annual book. I am so going to do that. We learned how to organize Christmas presents and school work. It was a very useful delicious evening.

It was perfect outside. The sun was shining and the shadows stretched across the yard. It was almost sunset. I was outside watering the flowers and spraying vader. I looked up and saw a monster dust cloud swarming over the house behind ours. It reached me by the time i rolled up the hose. Evening came all at once. Vader and i ran in and now we watch our lawn chairs overturn and vaders food bowl clattered away.
